Vegetable Production Guidelines

Lead Times

Please allow the following growing periods when placing an order. Sutherland Seedlings believes a seedling grown at a slower, steady pace produces a sturdier, healthier seedling. For this reason, orders need to be placed well in advance. A discounted ‘order price’ is offered to customers who confirm orders well in advance.

SEEDLING TYPE SUMMER WINTER
Cabbage; Broccoli 6 7
Cauliflower; Kale 6 7
Brinjal; Tomato 7 9
Lettuce; Green Mielies 5 6
Spinach 6 8
Butternut; Squash 6 7
Capsicums (Chilli’s; Peppers) 8 12

Excess Seedlings

Sutherland Seedlings usually have a limited amount of excess seedlings available. For an availability list, please contact the sales staff early in the week to avoid disappointment.  They will also be able to provide our most up to date price list.  For more information regarding seedling varieties please visit our Resources Page.

Forestry

Expansion in the forestry sector has been inhibited by both land and permit constraints and this has shifted the focus to achieving the highest possible yields per unit of land. This can be done by matching the best species to the growing site; making use of the best genetic material available for that species; buying quality seedlings and adopting the best silvicultural practices when planting. The guide below ensures you give your trees the best possible start!

Choose the Right Species

Take into account the following when choosing a species:

    1. The market for mature timber, i.e. pulp/poles/saw timber/etc.
    2. The climatic and soil conditions of the compartment to be planted
    3. Diseases and pests which pose a threat to a particular area/species
    4. The availability of improved genetic material for a species

More information, including a site-species matching table, is available for download on the Resources Page.

Advantages: Cheaper seedlings & transport Improved field survival Increased plug volume, but not as expensive as the M98.
Proven track record Higher MAI/ha
Shorter seedling production time Better nursery holdability
Disadvantages: Higher transplant stress Higher seedling cost Tap root easily bent due to the plug shape
Higher blanking requirements Higher transport cost
Less holdability in nursery Trays are heavier to handle when planting

Genetic Material

Sutherland Seedlings strives to source the best genetic material available to the industry. The nursery works closely with most major forestry companies in South Africa.

Eucalyptus Clones

Sutherland Seedlings has partnered with NCT Co-operative and the CSIR to produce E.grandis X E.nitens (GN) and E.grandis X E.urophylla (GU) cuttings.
These clones have been extensively trialled by NCT and have shown yield improvements of up to 30%, when planted on the correct site. Micro-hedges are housed in greenhouses so that all year round production is possible and the tip cuttings are rooted in heated greenhouses to improve the rooting percentage.
For the past three years the nursery has been bulking up their hedges and commercial quantities are now available on order. For more information on eucalyptus clones and their deployment, contact any member of the management team at Sutherland Seedlings.

Fruit & Indigenous Trees

Sutherland Seedlings has an extensive offering of indigenous and fruit trees. All fruit trees sold are grafted and certified by industry associations. At present all trees are sold in a 10 Litre plastic bag, and the nursery prides itself on supplying uniform, quality trees with a vigorous root system.

Sutherland Seedlings Avocado Nursery

Sutherland Seedlings launched a state-of-the-art Avocado Nursery in 2020, based near East London, South Africa. The nursery is focused on the propagation of clonal avocado trees for Southern Africa.
The nursery is managed according to the following principles:

  • Standards – good agricultural practices will be adhered to at all times that meet the highest standards in the industry.
  • Plant Health – the nursery has been designed to provide a bio secure environment in which to propagate trees and is not located in a commercial growing area. Clean, virus indexed plant material will be used to propagate trees.
  • Genetics – the nursery management team will source and use the best genetics available, keeping abreast of new rootstocks and cultivars that provide improvements in quality and yield.
  • Traceability – each tree produced in the nursery retains its full propagation history
  • Safety – staff welfare and safety is a priority for the nursery management team, ensuring a safe & enjoyable working environment.
  • Innovation – the latest nursery technology and propagation techniques will be adopted in the nursery, with the aim of producing the best possible quality for the orchard.

Container – Ellepot Propagation System

The nursery has invested in the Ellepot Propagation System
The paper pot technology has the following benefits:

  • An air pruned root system (higher root mass, better root architecture)
  • A stabilised media – trees are not removed from the paper pot at planting – thereby reducing transplant shock and improving orchard uniformity.
  • Up to 90% less plastic used to propagate trees

Accreditation

Sutherland Seedlings is audited annually by SAAGA and the Avocado Nursery Association (ANA) to ensure the nursery meets industry quality requirements.
